Section A Learning a Foreign Language
I. Warm-up Activity
1. Topic Discussion
i. Student’s Discussion
(T asks students to discuss the following topics on the passage.) 1) What’s your opinion about learning a foreign language?
― difficult, hard, interesting, useful, etc.
2) How do you learn a foreign language normally?
― listening to the radio, learning from teachers, having classes in language training schools, online learning, etc. ii. Teacher’s Summary
2
In fact, almost everyone can realize that it is essential to learn a foreign language, especially English. While, not all people learn it smoothly, someone can learn it successfully, yet someone fails. I believe learning English is not so hard as some students think and you may find you will like to learn it gradually if you find a helpful method to help you., just like the learner in section A.
2. Questions on the Topic and the Passage
1) Did the writer enjoy learning English in junior middle school? Why?
― Yes, he did. He enjoyed learning it because his teacher was kind, patient, and used a positive method of praising students.
2) Why the writer’s learning attitude changed after entering senior middle school?
― Because his senior middle school teacher was not as kind as his junior middle teacher. His senior middle school teacher would punish students for making mistakes. As a result, he did not want to speak English in class and he improved very little.
3) To the writer, is there any difference between college and junior middle school in learning English?
― Yes. The differences were that he didn?t have as many opportunities to ask questions in college and that other students intimidated him.
4) What did the writer feel when he was taking an online course?
― The writer didn?t feel intimidated when he was taking an online course because he could take more time to think more about his answers before posting them on screen.
5) Is the writer’s experience in learning a foreign language meaningful? Why?
―Yes, it is very meaningful. Learning a foreign language taught him the value of hard work. In addition, it taught him about another culture, opened his mind to new ways of doing things, and allowed him to communicate with more people.
II. Background Information
1. Online learning: Online learning, a form of distance education, refers to learning and other supportive resources that are available through the Internet. In an online lesson, students work with a computer program to select the materials they should be studying. The materials can be presented as text, graphics, animated graphics, audio, video, or a combination of these that are displayed in Web browsers or other multimedia players such as Windows Media Player. 2. Junior middle school: In the US, it refers to a school for children who are twelve to fifteen years old while in Britain it refers to a school for children aged seven to eleven years.
3. Senior middle school: It refers to a stage of education after junior middle school and before college or university.
4. Primary and secondary school: Begins around age six for US children. They attend five or six years of primary school. Next they go to secondary school, which consists of either a two-, three-year program or a four-year program. This is called “middle school” or “junior high school” and “senior high school “ (often just called “high school”).

III. Text Structure Analysis
The passage is a first person narrative about the experiences of learning a foreign language. It is made up of three parts.
Part One (Para 1): (This part makes the topic of the reading passage clear.) Learning a foreign language
was one of the most rewarding experiences the writer has had. Part Two (Para 2-7): (This is the major part of the reading passage.) In this part, the writer describes his learning experiences in four different learning stages (i.e. junior middle school, senior middle school, college, and after graduating). Para.2: The writer?s experiences with learning a foreign language began in junior middle school. Para.3: The writer?s experience in senior middle school was different from before. Para.4: The writer?s experiences in college. Para.5: When the writer was offered an opportunity to study English through an online course his learning situation was changed. Para.6: Online learning is no easier than regular classroom study; it requires a lot of time, commitment and discipline to keep up with the flow of the course. Para.7: The writer practiced all the time. Though he was still making many mistakes, he had reaped the benefits of all of his hard work. Part Three (Para 8): (It summarizes the writer?s experiences in learning a foreign language.) Through the learning process, the writer learned the value of hard work, gained insights into another culture, and opened his mind to new ideas. Communicating in English helped the writer form new friendships and bridge the gap between cultures. Topic: Foreign language learning, a rewarding experience, is worth the effort. (Para. 1) Learning a foreign language in a traditional classroom Learning a foreign language online At junior middle school: Positive teaching method led to good language-learning results. (Para.2 ) The language-learning situation changed for the better when I began learning online. (Para. 5) At senior middle school: My teacher was impatient which made me lose interest in learning the language. (Para. 3) Online learning is not easier than traditional classroom learning. (Para. 6) At college: Large classes and students with better English made me feel intimidated when I spoke English, and this prevented me There have been ups and downs with my online learning. However, I did not feel intimidated by students with better English, and I finally reaped the benefits of my hard 4
IV. Structured Writing
A Paragraph of Cause and Effect
For this unit, particular attention has been given to cause and effect. In our daily conversation, questions with why are often asked and answered. This shows that causal analysis is very common; it is something we are familiar with. The passage includes some paragraphs in which the writer uses a cause and effect to support his point.
In Paragraph 3, the writer puts forward his topic for the paragraph ― My learning experience in senior middle school is different from before. The writer goes on to tell us why his learning experience is different from before—”my new teacher quickly punished those who gave incorrect answers. Whenever we answered incorrectly, she pointed a long stick at us and, shaking it up and down, shouted, ?No! No! No! ...?” Then this leads to an effect —“It didn?t take me long to lose my eagerness to answer questions. Not only did I lose my joy in answering questions, but I also lost my desire to say anything at all in English.”
(Turn to P.15 and do the Exercise XI. Fill in the chart for Paragraph 2, finding the similar cause and effect relationship)
