古代文官考核制度，是指通过对在职官吏的工作，政绩状况的考核，确定 其等级和去留的一种管理制度。

中国古代文官考核制度历史悠久，早在尧舜时期，就有关于考核的记载;西周时期，有“巡狩”和“述职”:战国时期的“上计”是古代官员考核制度的雏形;秦汉时期，在“上计”的基础上又增加了“刺察”制度，古代官员考核制度正式确立:隋唐是官员考核制度发展最为迅猛的时期，唐代的考核实现了制度

化、法律化，而且严法严行、有法可依，“四善二十七最”的提出为后世考核制度的完备提供了有力的基础;明代和清代是中国封建社会的最后两个王朝，由于统治经验的长期积累，封建制度的各个环节都更加成熟，同时，由于封建社会已经发展到晚期，其本质瘤疾及各方面弊端也暴露得越来越充分，于是作为一种补救措施，官吏考核制度也因此更加趋于完善。它逐渐成为一套功能完备制度严密的管理体系，其中包括了考核的主管机构，考核的标准，考核的内容和方式，还有一些防止考核失真的措施。在中国古代文官考核制度的发展过程中，考核机构逐渐专门化，考核的标准更为合理科学，坚持“德才兼备”的原则，创立分类而治的思想，并且以立法的形式保障制度的严格实施。中国文官考核制度为中国古代的官吏治理贡献了重要力量，它具有一些积极因素，为封建政府选拔出大量优秀的人才，巩固了皇权，维护了封建统治阶级的利益;但因其本身存在很多缺陷，如，考核标准多而杂，考核过程出现营私舞弊、弄虚作假现象，考核过程中不可避免的封建专制主义，等等，再加上封建帝制的腐败，它具有历史的局限性，最终只能是流于形式，随着封建王朝的毁灭而灭亡。但我们也不能完全抹杀它的功绩，应该用历史的辩证的眼光来看待它，作为古代官吏管理制度中的重要一环，它虽然存在很多弊端和缺陷，但是仍有很多智慧的地方值得我们借鉴。
