How are you? I’m now studying in Class2 Grade1 in No.1 Middle School. I’m writing to tell you something about my recent life.

At present, I come to a very large and beautiful school. Here I’m glad to meet many teachers and friendly schoolmates, who are very kind to me. I am getting along well with my classmates and often take part in class activities. However, life in high school is stressful. Many students haven’t used to it, but I am determined to go through all the difficulties and learn each subject well. Now I still miss you and often think of the days we spent together. We helped each other with our study and shared our happiness and sadness in the junior school. We are true friends. I hope we’ll keep in touch with each other and let the flower of friendship blossom forever. Best wishes.

Yours, Li Hua

It feels like every time my mother and I start to have a conversation, it turns into an argument. We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly, my mother will push the conversation into World War 3. She’ll talk about my lack of bright future because I don’t plan to be a doctor. And much to her disappointment, I don’t want to do any job related to science, either. In fact, when I was pushed to say that I planned to major (主修) in English and communications, she nearly had a heart attack.

“Why can’t you be like my co-worker’s son?” she bemoans all the time. Her coworker’s son received a four-year scholarship and is now earning 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer. I don’t know what to answer except that I simply can’t be like Mr. Perfect as I’ve called the unnamed co-worker’s son. I can’t be like him. I am the type of the person who loves to help out in the community, write until the sun goes down, and most of all, wants to achieve a career because I love it, not because of a fame or salary.

I understand why my mother is worried about my future major. I’ve seen my mother struggle to raise me on her small salary and work long hours. She leaves the house around 6:30 am and usually comes home around 5 pm or even 6 pm. However, I want her to know that by becoming a doctor, it doesn’t mean I’ll be successful. I’d rather follow my dreams and create my own future.

If Confucius (孔子) were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.

While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.

But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.

In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually included Chinese

art, history and philosophy (哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Westerners philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.

So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well.

Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.

As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.

25. We can learn from Paragraph 4 that American students ________.

A. play an important role in Chinese competitions B. have a great interest in studying Chinese

C. try to get high scores in Chinese exams D. fight for a chance to learn Chinese

A. Forgotten Wisdom in America

B. Huge Fans of the Chinese Language C. Chinese Culture for Westerners D. Old Thinker with a Big Future

27. The passage is likely to appear in ________ .

A. a biography

C. a newspaper

B. a history paper D. a philosophy textbook

Chocolate is good for your heart, skin and brain. Usually, people think that chocolate is bad for their health. They describe chocolate as “something to die for” or say “death by chocolate”.
