We will be able to write better if we read a lot. Fourthly, reading increases our knowledge. We can learn about the history of the world. And we can know the latest news about the world without going out.

We can have great fun reading books. I think reading a book is just like talking with a great person. So let’s read more good books from now on.

Sixteen years ago, a boy gave me a nice gift which was a smile.

It was the early autumn of my first year at a middle school, and my old school was far away. As a result, no one knew who I was. I was very lonely, and afraid to make friends with anyone.

Every time I heard the other students talking and laughing, I felt my heart broken. I couldn’t talk with anyone about my problems.

Then one day, my classmates talked happily with their friends, but I sat at my desk unhappily as usual. At that moment, a boy entered the classroom. I didn’t know who he was. He passed me and then turned back. He looked at me, with a smile. Suddenly, I felt the touch of something bright and friendly. It made me feel happy, lively and warm. That smile changed my life. I started to talk with other students and made friends. Day by day, I became closer to everyone in my class. The boy with the lucky smile has become my best friend now.

One day I asked him why he smiled, but he couldn’t remember smiling at me! It doesn’t matter because all the dark days have gone. I believe that the world is what you think it is. If you think it lonely, you might always be alone. So, smile at world and it will smile back. 1. When did the writer get the gift? A. When she was 16 years old.

B. After she made friends with the boy. C. In her first year at a middle school

D. After she became closer to everyone in her class 2. Why was the smile an important gift?

A. Because the writer’s old school was far away. B. Because the writer didn’t know who the boy was. C. Because the smile didn’t mean anything to the boy. D. Because it helped the writer to make new friends.

3. Where does the writer now think her feeling of unhappiness came from? A. From her old school. B. From her parents.

C. From herself. D. From her classmate at the new school.

4. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage? An Unforgettable Experience B. My Middle School Days C. The Power of Smile D. My Best Friend

5. We can infer from the passage that the author used to be a (an)_______ person. A. outgoing B. friendly C. quiet D. Shy

What is language for? Some people seem to think it's for practising grammar rules and learning lists of words—the longer the lists, the better. That's wrong. Language is for the exchange(交流)of ideas and information. It's meaningless knowing all about a language if you can't use it freely. Many students I have met know hundreds of grammar rules, but they can't speak correctly or fluently(流利地). They are afraid of making mistakes. One shouldn't be afraid of making mistakes when speaking a foreign language. Native speakers make mistakes and break rules, too. Bernard Shaw once wrote, \the mistakes that native speakers make are different from those that Chinese students make. They're English mistakes in the English language. And if enough native speakers break a rule, it is no longer a rule. What used to be wrong becomes right. People not only make history, they make language. But a people can only make its own language. It can't make another people's language. So Chinese students of English should pay attention to grammar, but they shouldn't overdo(做过头)it. They

should put communication(交际)first. 6.Language is used to ________.

A. express oneself B. practice grammar rules C. talk with foreigners only D. learn lists of words 7.Generally, when an American or an Englishman speaks English, he ________. A. never makes mistakes B. often makes mistakes C. can't avoid making mistakes D. always makes mistakes

8.\often speak English too correctly. \sentence means that ________. A. foreigners speak correct English B. foreigners speak incorrect English

C. foreigners speak English according to the grammar rules D. foreigners never make mistakes when they speak English 9.If too many native speakers break a rule, ________.

A. what they use will become right B. they are against the law C. they should say sorry to others D. they will become heroes 10. When we speak a foreign language, we should ________. A. speak in Chinese way B. speak by the rules

C. speak to native speakers D. not be afraid of making mistakes C

Linda Evans was my best friend like the sister I never had.We did everything together; piano lessons, movies, swimming, horseback riding.

When I was 13, my family moved away. Linda and I kept in touch through letters, and we saw each other on special times—like my wedding and Linda’s. Soon we were busy with children and moving to new houses, and we wrote less often. One day a card that I sent came back, stamped “Address Unknown”. I had no idea how to find Linda.

Over the years, I missed Linda very much. I wanted to share happiness of my children and then grandchildren. And I need to share my sadness when my brother and then mother died. There was an empty place in my heart that only a friend like Linda could fill.
