The investigation report on traffic violation phenomena of

pedestrian in Guangzhou

Abstract

Objective To understand and calculate the traffic violation phenomena of the different social kinds of pedestrian in Guangzhou City, and provide the scientific basis for the traffic management and maintenance of good traffic order. Methods from the middle of February to the late March in 2006 , in Guangzhou, 5 types of crossings, 23 survey places, and 45 crossings in total were chosen representatively and given the live survey of passers-by violations. Moreover, the violation behaviors of passersby were snap shot, the survey information and the shot information has been collected, statistics and qualitative analysis have been given. Results The traffic violation problems of the passers-by in Guangzhou are rather serious. There are traffic violation behaviors of the passers-by in any crossings examined selectively. As for the traffic violations of the passersby in Guangzhou, there are no obvious difference among different genders and ages; at the same time, there is no special connection with personal status and education background; lack of traffic safety awareness, the most important factor to decide whether the passers-by cross the road or not, is whether there are cars passing by, but not the traffic lights in the crossings. Some crossings are not properly designed as well as the signal lights’ time, the management of the traffic is not well enough. Conclusion The citizens in Guangzhou are lack of safety awareness; the problems of traffic violation are serious. The problems should be dealt with from software and hardware perspectives. In one hand, the strength of education should be much enhanced, in the other hand, the facilities in the footpaths should be improved, so that the citizens will obey traffic rules voluntarily, and the traffic situation in Guangzhou will be better.
