ligandsinthecobalt-catalysedC–Hactivationcross-coupling.Whentheamountof1,10-phenanthrolinewasdecreasedto5mol%,100%conversionof1a–Iandan80%isolatedyieldcouldbeobtainedsimplybyincreasingthereactiontime(entry13,Table1).

Theobservationofcross-couplingproduct3aaintheabsenceofanyaddedmetalcatalystconcernedus,andourinitialthoughtswerethatthetransformationwasbeinginducedbymetalimpuritiesintheligandsetand/orthebase.Toexplorethispossibility,weana-lysedbothKOt-Buand1,10-phenanthrolineusinginductivelycoupledplasmaatomicemissionspectroscopy(ICP-AES)andinductivelycoupledplasmamassspectroscopy(ICP-MS).Indeed,10ppb–10ppmofPd,Cu,Feandothermetalspeciesweredetectedintheligandandbase.However,wealsofoundthattheadditionof10–1,000timestheseamountsofvariousmetalsaltstothereactionsystemdidnotobviouslyenhancethereactionrate,andinsomecasesthereactionef cacywasreduced.Wenextcarriedoutkineticstudiesinwhichweexaminedboththeconsumptionofthestartingmaterialsandtheformationofthedesiredproductsusinggaschromatographyinthepresenceofavarietyofadded
