1 All materials are not fuels which burn. 2 Oil does not blend with water any more than iron floats on it.

3 Her mistakes in the essay are not fewer than yours.

4 The traveler entertained his host with stories, some of which were really more than could be believed.

5 I have yet to hear the story.

have yet to+verb = have not yet +过去分词,译为“还没有”。 6 We know of no effective way to store solar energy. 7 She never comes but she brings some candy for the children. ? 8 we won’t lose nothing by it .

We don’t know nothing about it.

9 Bassanio,in his grief, replied that there was nothing he would not sacrifice. Bassanio

10 I wonder if he cannot help me out of the difficulty. 11 I don’t know if he cannot come today.

12 Until recently, scientists have been unable to devise a drill which would be capable of cutting through hard rock a t great depth.

13 In a world where the Americans, and the Chinese have reason to worry about their economies, it is the Indians who have lost the greatest faith in their economic fortunes.

14 It never rains but pours.

15 Children who have no control over their own funds have no incentive not to beg for money and then spend every dollar that comes into their hands.

In this era when most writers are expected to do everything but run the printing press, self-promotion is so accepted that we hardly give it a second thought. And yet, whenever I have a new book about to come out, I have to shake the unpleasant sensation that there is something unseemly about my own clamor for attention. Peddling my work like a

salesman still feels at odds with the high calling of literature. In such moments of doubt, I look to history for reassurance. It’s always comforting to be reminded that literary self-marketing has been practiced by the greats.

I was sitting in a railway carriage opposite a child who was holding a large elephant on wheels under its right arm. I cannot remember what the child looked like, but I remember that he elephant had a skin of grey cloth and a red saddle, and that the child had

squeezed its handkerchief under the saddle, and ,pointing to this ,said ,as if telling me a secret: “ My pocket.”

It always comes as a relief to me when a child ventures some remark of this kind,

because when I meet a strange child for the first time in the presence of grown-up people I do not ,as a rule, find conversation easy.

One’s ordinary conversation seems so far beneath the level of a small child .To say to it ,what wonderful weather we’ve been having. Would seem an outrage .The child would merely stare.

Thirty or forty years hence it will have adapted itself to grown-up conversation ,and will have learned to return babble for babble like an ordinary inmate of a railway carriage. At present it believes that conversation should be as interesting as the things one thinks about, and that it should either be amusing or informing and serious.

On the other hand ,it does not regard as serious many of the things that you and I regard as serious. There is no use looking over your paper at it and saying: “ Lloyd George seems to be getting into hot water with the French about the Poles.”

The only words in the sentence that will convey anything to its mind are “hot water”, and these will call up a picture of somebody putting his toe into a steaming bath and having to withdraw it hurriedly.

This may lead to some reminiscences of baths of its own and to a conversation on baths in general------especially on the horror of sitting on in the bath when the plug has been taken out ,and there begins the gurgling of the animal that lives just under the plug-hole and is always trying to swallow you .

1 My Grandmother lived in that leisurely age when servants were employed to do

housework.

2 The sun, which had hidden all day,now came over in all its splendor.

3 We are peoples that have inhereited ancient wisdom, that know the worth of biding one’s time.

4 Chinese trade delegations have been sent to Asian countries who will negotiate trade agreements with the respective governments.

5 She seeks happiness in selfish enjoyment ,where it can never be found.

6 We know that a cat, whose eyes can take in many more rays of light than our eyes, can see clearly in the night.

8 The manager insisted on building another villa ,which he had no use for.

1 We didn’t know much about each other twenty years age. We were guided by our intuition; you swept me off my feet. It was snowing when we got married at the Aahnee. Years passed ,kids came ,good times ,hard times ,but never bad times. Our love and

respect has endured and grown. We’ve been through so much together and here we are right back where we started 20 years ago—older, wiser-----with wrinkles on our faces and hearts. We now know many of life’s joys, sufferings ,secrets and wonders and we’re still here together. My feet have never returned to the ground.

But all historians are prisoners of their own experience. We bring to history the

preconceptions of our personalities and of our age. We cannot seize on ultimate and absolute truths. So the historian is committed to a doomed enterprise---the quest for an unattainable objectivity.

Conceptions of the past are far from stable. They are perennially revised by the urgencies of the present .When new urgencies arise in our won times and lives ,the historian’s spotlight shifts ,probing at last into the darkness, throwing into sharp relief things that were always there but that earlier historians had carelessly excised from the collective memory. New voices ring out of the historical dark and demand to be heard.

One has only to note how in the last half-century the movements for women’s rights and civil rights have reformulated and renewed American history .Thus the present incessantly reinvents the past. In this sense ,all history ,as Croce said ,is contemporary history .It is these permutations of consciousness that make history so endlessly fascinating and intellectual adventure. The one duty we owe to history, said Wilde, is to rewrite it .

1 For me the most interesting thing about a solitary life, and mine has been that for the last twenty years, is that it becomes increasingly rewarding. When I can wake up and watch the sun rise over the ocean, as I do most days, and know that I have an entire day ahead, uninterrupted, in which to write a few pages, take a walk with my dog, read and listen to music, I am flooded with happiness.

I’m lonely only when I am overtired, when I have worked too long without a break, when from the time being I feel empty and need filling up. And I am lonely sometimes when I come back home after a lecture trip, when I have seen a lot of people and talked a lot, and am full to the brim(边缘) with experience that needs to be sorted out. Then for a little while the house feels huge and empty, and I wonder where my selfis hiding. It has to be recaptured slowly by watering the plants and perhaps, by looking again at each one as though it were a person. It takes a while, as I watch the surf blowing up in fountains, but the moment the lonely moment comes when the worlds falls away, and the self emerges again from the deep unconscious, bringing back all I have recently experienced to be explored and slowly understood.

2 In his classic novel, “The Pioneers”, James Fennimore Cooper has his hero, a land developer, take his cousin on a tour of the city he is building. He describes the broad streets, rows of houses, and a teeming metropolis. But his cousin looks around bewildered. All she sees is a forest. “Where are the beauties and improvements which you were to show me?” she asks. He’s astonished she can’t see them. “Where! Why everywhere,” he replies. For thought they are not yet built on earth, he has built them in his mind, and they are as concrete to him as if they were already constructed and finished.

? Cooper was illustrating a distinctly American trait, future-mindedness: the ability to

see the present from the vantage point of the future; the freedom to feel unencumbered by the past and more emotionally attached to things to come. As Albert Einstein once said, “Life for the American is always becoming, never being.”

Lecture 16

1But, as has been true in many other cases, when they were at last married, the most ideal of situations was found to have been changed to the most practical. Instead of having shared their original duties, and as school-boys would say, going halves, they discovered that the cares of life had been doubled. This led to some distressing moments for both our friends; they understood suddenly that instead of dwelling in heaven they were still upon earth, and had made themselves slaves to new laws and limitations. Instead of being freer and happier than ever before, they had assumed new responsibilities; they had established a new household, and must fulfill in some way or another the obligations of it. They looked back with affection to their engagement; they had been longing to have each other to themselves, apart from the world, but it seemed they never felt so keenly that they were still units in modern society.

2 The former friend . A sad thing . At best a wistful memory ; at worst a dangerous

enemy who is in possession of many of your deepest secrets. But what was it that drove you apart? A misunderstanding , a betrayed confidence ,an unrepaid loan ,an ill-conceived flirtation. A poor choice of spouse can do in a friend just like that. Going into the business together can be a serious mistake. Time, money, distance ; all noted friendship killers. You quit doing drugs, you’re not such good friends with your dealer anymore.,

And lest we forget , there are the friends you love to hate. They call at inopportune times . They say stupid things. They butt in , they boss you around ,they embarrass you in public. They invite themselves over . They take advantage and are convinced they are your best friend on the planet.

3 Over the past decade , the frequency , severity and political significance of global health problems have produced more awareness and action by countries ,international organizations and non-governmental actors on healthy issues than at any other time in history.
