第二部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2.5分,满分50分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A

When I was an education official in Palo Alto, California, Polly Tyner, the president of our school board, wrote a letter that was printed in the Palo Alto Times. Polly?s son,Jim,had great difficulty in school. He was classified as the educationally disabled and required a great deal of patience on the part of his parents and teachers. But Jim was a happy kid with a great smile that lit up the room. His parents knew his academic difficulties, but always tried to help him see his strengths so that he could walk with pride.Shortly after Jim finished high school, he was killed in a motorcycle accident. After his death, his mother sent this letter to the newspaper.

Today we buried our 20-year-old son.He was killed instantly in a motorcycle accident on Friday night. How I wish I had known when I talked to him last that it would be the last time.If I had only known, I would have said, “Jim, I love you and I?m very proud of you.”

I would have taken time to count the many blessings he brought to the lives of the many who loved him.I would have taken the time to appreciate his beautiful smile, the sound of his laughter, his genuine love of people.

When you put all the good qualities on the scale and try to balance all the irritating phenomena such as the radio which was always too loud, the haircut that

wasn't to our liking, the dirty socks under the bed, etc, your angry feelings won’t amount to much.

I won't get another chance to tell my son all that I would have wanted him to hear, but, other parents, you do have a chance.Tell your young people what you would want them to hear if you knew it would be your last conversation. The last time I talked to Jim was the day he died.He called me to say, “Hi, Mom! I just called to say I love you. Got to go to work,Bye.”He gave me something to treasure.forever.

If there is any purpose at all for Jim's death, maybe it is to make others appreciate more of life and to have people, especially members, take the time to let each other know just how much we care.

You may never have another chance.

D.suggest people taking the chance to express their love in time 40.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage? A. Many people loved him.

B. Jim's smile cheered up his family.

C. Jim was killed in a motorcycle accident at the age of 20. D. Jim constantly expressed his love to his mother.

I had made up my mind a long time ago that I would not give homeless people money, because I could never be sure what that money would be used for.Instead,I decided, I would buy them a sandwich,a cold drink on a hot day, a cup of coffee, whatever I could manage.

I was out recently and saw a homeless man outside of a Starbucks. So I dropped another few coins in and went into the Starbucks.I decided I would buy this man lunch.I bought a sandwich and soda.

Just as I was leaving the store, two policemen were approaching the man.Obviously the shop owners had complained of his wandering and the police were there to draw him away from the storefronts.Just as they were about to wake him,I asked one of the officers if it was all right if I just gave the man something before he went I was not sure why I asked the permission but the policeman said sure and I just left the bag in the man?s cart, got in my car and drove off.

As I was driving off, I remember thinking, “I hope people saw that\.Then I had

to seriously ask myself why I hoped people had seen me give the man a sandwich from Starbucks. Was it because I wanted people to think, “She's such a nice person!”? Why did I hope others had seen me do it? I continued to wonder this all evening.

The next morning it came to me.I wanted people to have witnessed that small act of kindness not so that I would receive credit and praise but so that they might be inspired to do the same and in so doing that others still would witness their acts of kindness. Thus the whole spirit of pity and giving would be lasting.

“Indeed,” George Washington wrote in his diary in l785, “some kind of fly, or bug, had begun to hunt on the leaves before I left home.” The father of our country was not the father of bug. When Washington wrote that sentence, Englishmen had been referring to insects as bugs for more than a century, and we Americans had already created lightening bug.But the English were soon to get rid of tile bugs in their language, leaving it to the Americans to call a bug a bug in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The American bug could also be a person,an enthusiast or a fanatic, as the Congressional Globe(美国国会议事录)records in l841: “Mr. Alford of Georgia warned the ?tariff bugs' of the South that?he would read them out of church.\although “fan” became the usual term, sports enthusiasts were racing bugs, basketball bugs, and the like. And a bug could be just a plain person with mental disease, confined(限制)to a bughouse.

Or the bug could be a small machine or object, a telegraph key; a dip used by a card sharp to hold cards under the table;even a car, the small, bug-shaped, trademarked Volkswagen beetle. The bug could also be burglar alarm, from which comes the
