It’s sizzlingly hot, one of the few properly hot days there’s been this summer, and the men playing on the green are sweating in their crimson faces with slightly soiled white handkerchiefs. Here in the pavilion it’s cooler, and there women put out the crockery and cucumber sandwiches in preparation for half-time.

The batsman is Harry Rose, a lad who all the girls in the village have taken a great fancy to, and there are five of them here to cheer him on. He hits the ball that Mikey the bowler throws him with a loud thwack and the ball soars into the air and disappears into the undergrowth. His team murmur happily—it’s much too hot to shout—and Guy the umpire signals half-time.

Over the tea and sandwiches it’s not the cricket that’s discussed but the terrible fate of the village green at Hepple Hemmingsworth, two kilometres away. The whole village had woken to the news that the picturesque green, the pride and joy of hepple. Had been

turned into a muddy mess overnight. Vehicle –at least two, it was though –has driven over the green at a time when the ground was particularly wet due to the rains that had fallen non-stop for three days. Shock and horror! Who was responsible for this act of vandalism? If it happened at Hepple Hemmingsworth, only two kilometres away, then it could happen here, at Wopping Tootle.

For fully ten minutes, the tables buzz with the news, but it’s just too hot and the day’s too pleasant to stay upset for long. There’s a game to be played and a long, lazy afternoon to pass. Hang Hepple Hemmingsworth! It’s Sunday afternoon in august on the village green and all’s well with the world!
