C. to eat more food D. to eat dry bread 5. The judges in old England considered that a man could___if he told a lie. A. swallow dry bread easily B. eat a lot of dry bread C. drink milk or hot water D. hardly swallow dry bread Most of us can find 15 minutes or half an hour each day for some specific CCDAC regular activity. It may be a free period or a regular wait, say in the queue for a bus or meal --- even while eating breakfast. One famous surgeon always made it a rule to spend at least 15 minutes on general reading before he went to sleep each night. Whether he went to bed at 10 pm or 2:30 am made no difference. Even if you cannot keep to this kind of discipline, it is a good idea to make sure you always have a general interest book in your pocket. Don’t forget it should be a book which entertains you and the English must no be too difficult for you. Nearly all “speed reading” courses have a “pacing” element---some timing device which lets the student know how many words a minute he is reading. You can do this simply by looking at your watch every 5 or 10 minutes and noting down the page number you have reached. Check the average number of words per page for the particular book you are busy reading the book? Well, this is difficult at first. A friend can help by timing you over a set period, or you can read within hearing distance of a public clock which strikes the quarter hours. Pace yourself every three or four days, always with the same kind of easy, general interest book. You should soon notice your habitual w.p.m. rate creeping up. 1 The passage recommends setting aside for reading practice. A. two hours a day B. one hour a day C. 15 minutes or half an hour a day D. three minutes a day before meal 2. One famous surgeon always made it a rule to read ______. A. a book you will never forget B. a serious book C. several books of various kinds D. an easy and interesting English book 4. According to the passage, a “pacing” device ______. A. times a student’s reading speed B. is not included in most speed reading courses C. is an aid to vocabulary learning D. should be used whenever we read alone 5. Looking at your watch every 5 or 10 minutes ______. A. avoids the need for reading faster B. is not the same as pacing C. is not easy at first D. helps you to remember the page number you were at last time Like most people, I was brought up to look upon life as a process of getting .It was not until in my late thirties that I made this important discovery: giving-away makes life so mush more exciting .You need not worry If you lack money .This is how I experimented with giving-away. If an idea for improving the window display of a neighborhood store flashes to me,I step in and make the suggestion to the storekeeper. One discovery I made about giving-away is that it is almost impossible to give away anything in this world without getting something back, though the return often comes in an unexpected form. One Sunday morning the local post office delivered an important special delivery letter to my home, though it was addressed to me at my office.I wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation.More than a year later I needed a post-office box for a new business I was starting.I was told at the window that there no boxes left, and that my name would have to go on a long waiting list.As I was about to leave, the postmaster appeared in the doorway. He had overheard(无意中听到)our conversation .“Wasn’t it you that wrote us that letter a year ago about delivering a special delivery to your home? ”I said yes.“Well, you certainly are going to have a box in this post office if we have to make one for you.You don’t know what a letter like that means to us.We usually get nothing but complaints” 1. From the passage, we understand that_____ A. the author did not understand the importance of giving until he was in late thirties B. the author was like most people who were mostly receivers rather than givers C. the author received the same education as most people during his childhood D. the author liked most people as they looked upon life as a process of getting 2. According to the author,_____ A. giving means you will have less money B. the excitement of giving can bring you money C. you don’t have to be rich in order to give D. when you give away money, you will be rich 3. The author would make the suggestion to the storekeeper_____ A. in writing B. in person C. in the window display D. about the neighborhood 4. When the author needed a post-office box,_____ A. he had to put his name on a waiting list 1.A. D. B. he wrote the postmaster a note of appreciation C. many people had applied for post-office boxes before him D. he asked the postmaster to make one for him 5. In reply to the postmaster’question, the author said_____ A. it was the special delivery B. it was the post-office box C. it was the note of appreciation he wrote D. it was he who wrote him a letter a year ago Mrs. Brown had a small garden behind her house, and in the spring she planted some vegetables in it. She looked after them carefully, and when the summer came, they looked very nice. One evening Mrs. Brown looked at her vegetables and said, “Tomorrow I am going to pick them, and then we can eat them.” But early the next morning, her son ran into the kitchen and shouted, “Mother, mother! Come quickly! Our neighbor’s ducks are in the garden and they are eating our vegetables”. Mrs. Brown ran out ,but it was too late! All the vegetables were finished! Mrs. Brown cried, and her neighbor was very sorry, but that was the end of the vegetables! Then a few days before Christmas, the neighbor brought Mrs. Brown a parcel. In it was a beautiful, fat duck, and on it was a piece of paper with the words, “Enjoy you vegetables!” 1.Where was Mrs. Brown’s garden? A. In front of her house. B. In the middle of her house. C. Behind her house. D. On the left side of her house. 2.What was she planning to do with the vegetables the nexc t day? A. To feed ducks. B. To sell them in a market. C. To throw them away. D. He saw their neighbor’s ducks eating their vegetables in the garden. 4.What did Mrs. Brown’s do when she heard her son shouting? A.She ran out of the house. B.She still stayed in the house. C.She was shouting, too. D.She called her neighbor. 5.What words were written on a piece of paper? A. Enjoy you vegetables. B. Thanks for your vegetables. 1.C. 4.A. 原文第四段说“布郎夫人跑了出去,但是太晚了”,显然A与原文的意思是相符的。 5.A. 见原文的最后一句话。 C. Merry Christmas. D. Happy birthday. Not all language is verbal. Some of our communication occurs BCACA without words. We often use our entire bodies for communication. We may raise our eyebrows (眉毛) to indicate surprise. Perhaps we nod our heads to show that we agree with something. There are hundreds of nonverbal signals that can be used to communicate. These signals are part of language, and they are governed by rules in the same way that our spoken language is. For this reason, people who speak different languages often use different nonverbal signals as well. In addition to verbal communication and the type of nonverbal communication discussed above, there are other message systems that we use to communicate. When we speak to some people, we may stand very close to them, while we may stand far away from other people. Use of space, then, is a way we can communicate the relationship we feel with another person. The way we dress can also communicate for us. The person who wears dirty jeans and a T-shirt communicates a different attitude from a person who wears neat trousers and an attractive shirt. We can even use time to communicate. The person who is on time for an appointment shows a different attitude from the person who is an hour late does. Can you think of other message systems we use in communication? 1. Language, according to the passage, is actually A. verbal only B. verbal and nonverbal as well C. the use of our bodies D. nonverbal signals 2. Nonverbal signals A. have few rules B. are more useful than speech C. are often used in communication D. are entirely separate from language 3. If a person wears a suit and a tie, it is a matter of A. attitude B. relationship C. formality D. habit 4. People who do not speak the same language A. have no nonverbal signals in common B. cannot communicate with nonverbal signals C. often have different nonverbal signals D. use the same nonverbal signals 5. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a form of nonverbal communication? _____ A. Pace. B. Time. C. Dressing. D. Space. Inside its one-centimeter-thick steel case is a layer of waxy insulating material, three centimeters thick, for extra fire-resistance and to reduce the shock of impact. Inside this is the motor, electronics and 160 meters of magnetic tape which records about 50 aspects of the aircraft's operation over the previous 25 hours. \℃ over half its surface area for 30 minutes as well as the weight of very heavy, sharpened spikes being dropped on it. It is almost indestructible. However, in the case of the EL AL aircraft which crashed into a tower block in Amsterdam only minutes after take-off, the device was so badly damaged by the resulting fire and explosion of the plane's full petrol tanks that the tape could not be played back. \gives off ultrasonic signals when an aircraft crashes into the sea and this signal helps in the search for the location of the crash. In 1974 a TWA Boeing 707 exploded in mid-air above the Ionian Sea near Greece. When the wreckage was eventually found a month later, the black box was found lying on the ocean bed 3km below the sea surface, still signaling,\ The black box was made compulsory for all aircraft in the late 1950's and is located near the tail of the airplane. It is the safest area as the tail is usually found to be the least damaged after a crash. Next to it is another armored box, the cockpit voice recorder which records everything picked up by a microphone in the cockpit on a tape loop 30 minutes long. The two boxes look very similar and sometimes even rescuers mistake one for the other. At the front is another unit, not designed to withstand a crash. Called the brains of the system, this flight data acquisition unit collects data from all over the aircraft and compresses it into a single stream of digital data to be sent to the crash-proof recorder. After a crash and when the black box is found, the accident investigators play the tape and present their evidence. \have been careless or the manufacturer could have been at fault or a bomb could have been placed on board,\the cause, the black box can point the finger of blame. \ \from that, the box is also used on a day-to-day basis to help locate any problems in maintenance, check each engine's
