U11 L4 Language Points:

1. According to a research published by Leeds University yesterday... 1) according to---as stated by sb. or in sth.

e.g. According to John you were in England last week. According to my watch it is 10 o’clock. 注意:

a) according to是指按照他人的意见或其他事物,因此不可说 according to me. b) according to 后不接opinion, view等词为宾语, 表 “据某人的观点”习惯上用 “in one’s opinion”

2) publish, report , print, announce, 与declare

publish 指通过口头和书面方式让公众都知道, 但主要是后者; 发表, 出版 report 报道,报导 print 印刷

announce 宣布,通告(主要指公共的或官方的声明,把人们关心或感兴趣的事正式公布于众)

declare 宣告,断言(经常用于正式场合,表示公开地、直接而有力地宣布.该词用于官方宣布时,强调一种具有权威性的宣布. e.g. declare war on sb.) Ex.

As long as you accept our conditions, we’ll start working immediately. 2) watched 过去分词作后置定语。

过去分词只有一种形式:规则动词由动词原形加词尾-ed构成;不规则动词的过去分词没有统一的规则要求。

* 过去分词作定语：

e.g. Our class went on an organized trip last Monday. Those elected as committee members will attend the meeting.

注意:当过去分词是单词时, 一般用于名词前, 如果是过去分词短语, 就放在名词的后面, 做后置定语, 相当于一个被动语态的定语从句。

a) sb. agree with sb./what sb. said

e.g. I quite agree with you/your opinions/what you said. b) sth. agree with sb.“适合”(多用于否定句或疑问句) e.g. The humid climate didn’t agree with him. c) They agreed on a date for the next meeting. d) We agreed to their proposal.

4. comment on 发表意见, 提出看法

e.g. I don’t feel I can comment on their decision. I won’t comment on this matter. 我对此事不予评论。

5. Leeds university concluded that people made a distinction between…. distinction

1) (c./u.)(n.)---difference or contrast between one person or thing and another

“区别,对比”

e.g. 鸭与鹅有什么区别? What is the distinction between ducks and geese? 2) (c.)---mark of honour 勋章 e.g. He won a distinction for bravery.

3) (u.)---quality of being excellent 优秀 e.g. She is a writer of distinction.

6. But it doesn’t mean that we can increase the amount of bad language used on television. mean (vt.)

1) This means we have to wait another week. 2) Forgive me please. I didn’t mean it.

3) I meant to give you this book today, but I forgot. 4) The dark clouds mean rain.

5) I mean what I say. 我说到做到。 be meant for… 打算做…用

e.g. 这房间准备做什么用? What is this room meant for?

7. 60-year-old driver

60-year-old是复合形容词 a six-year-old boy a two-meter-long desk

8. a load of (=loads of) [俚]很多, 大量 a load of cobblers [俚]胡说, 废话

9. help out 帮忙做事,帮助克服困难

e.g. When I bought the house, my sister helped me out with a loan. 我买这所房子时, 我姐姐借给我一笔钱解了急。

10. Sherri wrote a letter to a local paper asking her mother to contact her. 1) asking her mother?是现在分词作伴随状语. e.g. 老板去看望了金先生,表扬了他出色的工作.

The boss went to see Mr. King, praising him for his excellent work. 2)contact

a) (vt.)---reach sb./sth. by telephone, radio, etc.; communicate with… e.g. I shall contact you by telephone on Friday. b) (vi.)--- reach by telephone, radio, etc.; touch e.g. When the two wires contact, the machine starts.
