Passage B

Once a month, my friends gather in a book club for talk and homemade coffee cakes, while our children play in another room with a babysitter. I had looked forward to it for weeks. But one morning, when the club planned to discuss a popular new biography(传记), my two-year-old daughter woke with a fever. So we stayed home.

“what are we going to do today?” I asked. “Read books.” She said.

“Okay, bring me three books. Three books to start. Then you can help me do some washing.” I said. Then she ran to her room and returned with three books.

As I sat on the sofa that day with my arms around my daughter and studied her eyes, her red
