When an earthquake hit a small town, many houses fell down. After the earthquake, all the newspapers reported many stories about some of the families who were in trouble.

One Sunday, when I was reading a newspaper, a special picture touched me. It gave the clothing sizes of each family member. I thought that this would be a good chance to teach my children to help those who were less lucky than themselves. I said to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and three-year-old Meghan, “We have so much, and these poor people now have nothing. We’ll share what we have with them. ”

I filled a box with foods and clothes. While I was doing this, I encouraged the boys to choose their toys and donate some of their less favourite things. Meghan watched quietly as the boys took out their old toys and games and put them together. Then she walked away. A few minutes later she came back with Lucy, her much-loved doll. She put the doll on top of the other toys. “Oh, dear, ”I said. “You don’t have to give Lucy. You love her so much. ”Meghan said, “Lucy makes me happy, Mommy. Maybe she’ll make another little girl happy, too. ”

I looked at Meghan for a long moment. She taught me a lesson. It’s easy to give something that we don’t want any more, but harder to give what we cherish(珍爱),isn’t it? 41. The writer has _____ children. A. one

Did you hear the saying “If you want a friend, be one. ”?

Here is how one new teacher made friends with the girls and the boys in her class on the first day of school. As the bell rang, the teacher smiled at each girl and boy. Then she said in a quiet voice, “Good morning. How nice it is to have all of you in my class this year. I’d like to know each of you. I am sure we will enjoy working together. ” Everyone felt that she meant what she said because of her sweet voice and her friendly look.

She told the girls and boys her name and wrote it on the blackboard. Then she told them some of the things she liked to do and she was hoping to do with them during the year. Then she said to the class, “Now you know my name and the things I like and I want to know your names and the things you like. Then I will feel that I know you. ” Could you make friends by doing the same things as the teacher did?

One way of getting to know and to like the other girls and boys in your class is to find out more about them. It is often easy to be friends with those people, who have the same hobbies with you, play the same games, and have made the same journeys you have.

First of all, you must want to learn. If you are not interested in learning English, no class will help you and no book will help you. So you have to be honest with yourself. Ask yourself, “Do I really want to learn English?” If you can’t answer “yes” to this question ,it is better for you to set English aside until you are ready and willing to learn.

9

●Set goals.(目标)

To learn English well, you must set some goals. 59 It will also help you to see your progress. Ask yourself, “What are my goals? What areas would I like to improve?” Think about what your goals are, and review once in a while to see that you are making progress toward your goals.

●Practice, practice and practice.

After you have set your goals, you have a better idea of what you need to practice. Just like the athletes whose goal is the Olympics must train daily, you as a language learner must practice language every day to make progress toward your goal. 60 A.Want to learn.

B.I think it is not easy to learn it well. C.Make friends with some Americans online. E.Reading is a very good way to learn new words.
