The common cold is the world's most widespread illness, which is plagues(疫病)that flesh receives. The most widespread fallacy(谬误)of all is that colds are caused by cold. They are not. They are caused by viruses(病毒)passing on from person to person. You catch。cold by coming into contact, directly or indirectly, with someone who already has one.
If cold causes colds,it would be reasonable to expect the Eskimos to suffer from them forever. But they do not. And in isolated arctic regions explorers have reported being free from colds until coming into contact again with infected people from the outside world by way of packages and mail dropped from airplanes. During the First World War soldiers who spent long periods in the trenches(战壕),cold and wet, showed no increased tendency to catch colds.
In the Second World War prisoners at the notorious Auschwitz concentration camp(奥斯维辛集中营),naked and starving, were astonished to find that they seldom had colds. At the Common Cold Research Unit in England, volunteers took part in Experiments in which they gave themselves to the discomforts of being cold and wet for long stretches of time. After taking hot baths, they put on bathing suits, allowed themselves to be with cold water, and then stood about dripping wet in drafty room. Some wore wet socks all day while others exercised in the rain until close to exhaustion. Not one of the volunteers came down with a cold.
If, then, cold and wet have nothing to do with catching colds, why are they more frequent in the winter? Despite the most pains-taking research,no one has yet found the answer. One expla- ation offered by scientists is that people tend to stay together indoors more in cold weather than at other times, and this makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on. No one has yet found a cure for the cold. There are drugs and pain suppressors(止痛片)such as aspirin, but all they do is relieve the symptoms(症状)·
21 .Which of the following does NOT agree with the chosen passage? A. The Eskimos do not suffer from colds all the time.
B. People suffer from colds just because they like to stay indoors. C. Colds are not caused by cold
D.A person may catch a cold by touching someone who already has one.
22. Arctic explorers may catch colds when______.
A. they are coming into touch again with the outside world B .they are writing reports in terribly cold weather C. they are free from work in the isolated arctic regions D. they are working in the isolated arctic regions 23. The passage mainly discusses_______. A .the experiments on the common cold
B. the reason arid the way people catch colds C .the continued spread of common colds D .the fallacy about the common cold

American Graduates will Struggle to Find Jobs This Year
American graduates will find it tougher than ever to get jobs in the coming year, as American economy slows down and unemployment rises. Experts say a chronic over-supply of graduates and a shortage of”high end\jobs had already been causing difficulties, but the mass lay-offs and business closures(倒闭)in recent months has made the situation even worse.
American Prime Minister has told students that the problem of graduate employment is” at

the top of the government's agenda(议事日程)”.Six and a half million graduates in America will be looking for a job over the next year. The government says it is going to try to create nine million jobs for them and for those from previous years who are still unemployed. That will not be easy, though . Economic growth in America is expected by some to fall below the figure of 8%,cited by many as the minimum(最小值)needed to continue to create enough jobs.
There are three problems for the new graduates to cope with. Firstly, the economic slowdown here means there are fewer jobs available. Secondly, widespread redundancies mean there are more experienced people than there might have been in previous years, trying to secure the same jobs as them. Thirdly, there are many graduates from previous years who are still jobless.
Marry studied exhibition planning and management at Los Angeles Business School. She said everyone thought it would be easy for her to get a job when she graduated. But even though she has had dozens of interviews at job fairs, she has not managed to land the kind of job she wanted. ”I've ended up with an intern(实习)job,”she says,”which is nothing to do with my major.\ 230(£159)a month, more than many of her classmates who have had to take jobs that give them half that, but far less than she had hoped for.”I might go back to school to study for a masters’degree because it's so hard,”she says.”Hopefully finding a job will be easier with a higher qualification.\
24. We can infer from the passage that__________. A. The graduates this year will have enough jobs.
B. The people will find jobs easily because the government will create nine million jobs for them this year.
C. All of previous graduates have found jobs. D. Not every graduate can find a job this year.
25.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage? A. Marry studied exhibition planning and management
B. Marry did an intern job but it wasn’t connected with her major. C. Marry is easy to find a job because of her major.
D. Marry was unsatisfied with the income. 26. From the theme, this text is
A. a narrative story B. a financial comment C. a scientific report D. a piece of news

Scientists are working to develop crop plants that can reduce the amount of water used for agriculture . Almost sixty percent of the world’s fresh water withdrawals from rivers, lakes and other water resources go toward irrigating fields. Scientists are using biotechnology as well as traditional breeding methods to develop water-saving crops to feed a growing world.
Tommy Carter is a plant scientist in North Carolina working for the Agricultural Research Service it,the United States Department of Agriculture. He leads Team Drought,a group of re- searchers at five universities. They have been using conventional breeding methods to develop soy-beans that can grow well under dry conditions. Tommy started working on drought-resistant soy- beans in1981.His research has taken him as far as China, where soybeans have been grown for thousands of years.

Farmers in the United States ,however, have grown soybeans for only about a century. Tom my Carter says the soybeans they grow arc for the most part genetically similar. More differences could better protect crops against climate changes that can reduce production. Those changes in- elude water shortages which could increase from global warming. The Agriculture Department has a soybean germplasm collection(种质收集),a collection of genetic material passed from one gen- eration to the next. Members of Team Drought studied more than 2,500 examples from the collec- Lion. They looked at those from Asia and searched for germplasms that could keep plants from weakening and wilting(枯萎)during hot,dry summers in the United States.
Tommy says they found only five, but these slow-wilting lines can produce more than normal soybeans under drought conditions. The team is now doing field tests. The first breeding line is expected to be released next year for use by private seed companies and public soybean breeders. Scientists are also working on other crop plants that either use less water or use it better,or both.
28. According to the passage, scientists try to find out how to_. A. save the world’s water resource B. increase crop production C. feed a growing world D. grow crops with less water 29. Why did Tommy Carter come to China?
A. lie likes traveling. B. He’s doing research into soybeans.
C. China has a long history D. lie works for the Agricultural Research Service. 30. What do we know about slow-wilting plants talked about in the passage?
A. They yield big profits. B. They seem to be drought-resistant.
C. They can grow in almost any climate. D. They need much water for their growth. 31 .The scientists are developing the crop plants because_____________. A. traditional crop plants can’t grow under dry conditions B. only biotechnology could lead to a success in this area C. irrigating fields has used almost 60% of our freshwater D. we need new crops to save more water than ever before

Five years ago,David Smith wore an expensive suit to work every day.“I was a clothes ad- dict(迷),”he jokes.“I used to carry a fresh suit to work with me so I could change if my clothes got wrinkled(皱的).”Today David wears casual clothes-khaki pants and a sports shirt-to the office. lie hardly ever wears a necktie.“I’m working harder than ever,”David says,“and I need to feel comfortable.”
More and more companies are allowing their office workers to wear casual clothes to work. In the United States, the changes from formal to casual office wear have been slow. In the early 1990s,many companies allowed their workers to wear casual clothes on Friday(but only on Fri- day). This became known as“ dress-down Friday\“casual Friday \ extra one-day-a-week benefit for workers has really become an everyday thing,”said business adviser Maisly Jones.
Why have so many companies started allowing their workers to wear casual clothes? One reason is that it's easier for a company to attract new workers if it has a casual dress code .“A lot of young people don't want to dress up for work,”says the owner of a software company,“so it's hard to hire people if you have a conservative dress code.\and more productive when they are wearing comfortable clothes.
