Book report of Jane Eyre (ⅰ)

Tran 092 蒋坚荣 Jane Eyre ranks as one of the greatest and most perennially popular works of English fictions.Charlotte Bronte(21 April 1816 – 31 March 1855) was an English novelist and poet, the eldest of the three Bronte sisters who survived into adulthood, whose novels are English literature standards. She wrote Jane Eyre under the pen name Currer Bell.

Jane Eyre is a first-person narrative of the title character. The novel goes through five distinct stages: Jane's childhood at Gateshead, where she is emotionally and physically abused by her aunt and cousins; her education at Lowood School, where she acquires friends and role models but also suffers privations and oppression; her time as the governess of Thornfield Hall, where she falls in love with her Byronic employer, Edward Rochester; her time with the Rivers family during which her earnest but cold clergyman-cousin St John Rivers proposes to her; and the finale with her reunion with and marriage to her beloved Rochester.

In the novel , Jane Eyre’s rebellion is obviously seen in resistance to cousin John Reeds, Mrs. Reed and the fate. Both parents died in

infectious illness, so ten-year old Jane was sent to Gateshed to be raised by Mrs. Reed. She was mistreated there, even looked down as less than a

servant. Every day ,what waited her was insulting and bullying without any reason. Ill-affected as she was , she bore it. However, when she was beaten by her cousin John rudely again , she couldn’t stand anymore, she shouted at him:" Wicked and cruel boy. You are like a murder, you are like a slave-driver, you are like the evil rulers of ancient Rome". The roar was against being bullying , the roar was resistance to being tied without any freedom. Mrs. Reed treated Jane as an evil from inside and outside. She never showed any love and care to Jane though she promised Mr. Reed she could take care of Jane. When she accused Jane of a liar, Jane burst into yell:” I am not deceitful. If I were, I should say I love you, but I declare that do not love you. I dislike you the worst of anyone in the world, except John Reed…I am glad you are no relation of mine. I will never call you aunt again as long as I live. If anyone asks me how I liked you, and how you treated me, I will say that you have pity, and that you treated me with miserable cruelty. ” And she decided to leave Gateshed to Lowood Orphanage. Nevertheless, the situation there is also severe. The indifference and cruelty of the director of the orphanage, the terrible living condition, yet she chose to live on , to fight against the authority , to fight against the adversity ,to fight against her miserable fate.
