Cigarette ends are everywhere --- littering our streets and beaches --- and for decades they’ve been thought of as “unrecyclable”. But a New Jersey based company, called TerraCycle, has taken on the challenge, and has come up with a way to recycle millions of cigarette ends and turn them into industrial plastic products. Its aim is to recycle things that people normally consider impossible to reuse.

Obviously it would be even better for the environment if everyone just stopped smoking, but the statistics show that although there has been an increase in anti-smoking ads and messaging, between 2000 and 2014, global sales of cigarettes increased by 8 percent, and a whole lot of those cigarette ends are ending up as trash. Since most of our litter eventually ends up in waterways, cigarette ends can surely pollute the surrounding environment. “It only takes a single cigarette end to pollute a liter of water,” TerraCycle founder, Tom Szaky, said. “Animals can also mistake littered cigarette ends for food.”

So how do you go about turning all those poisonous ends into something useful? TerraCycle does this by first breaking them down into separate parts. They mix the remaining materials, such as the tobacco and the paper, with other kinds of rubbish, and use it on non-agricultural land, such as golf courses. The filters (过滤嘴) are a little harder. To recycle these, TerraCycle first makes them clean and cuts them into small pieces, and then combines them with other recycled materials, making them into liquid for industrial plastic products.

They’re now also expanding their recycling offerings to the rest of the 80 percent of household waste that currently can’t be recycled, such as chocolate packaging, pens, and mobile phones. The goal is to use the latest research to find a way to stop so much waste ending up in landfill (垃圾填埋), and then get companies to provide money for the process. And so far, it’s working.

For the Swiss, punctuality is a source of deep satisfaction. They obtain real joy from the fact that life unfolds on time and in a highly efficient manner. Whenever I visit Switzerland, I go through several stages of punctuality reaction. At first it delights me, especially if I’m coming from Neighboring Italy or France with their rather more flexible approach to timekeeping. By contrast, life in Switzerland is enthusiastic and dependable. If someone says they will meet me at 2 pm, they arrive at 2 pm not 2:05 (or 1:55,for that matter). I like this, for a while. Then it annoys me. The extreme punctuality strikes me as a kind of being mean, and I find myself agreeing with the English writer Evelyn Waugh who said that, “punctuality is the virtue of the bored.” That is unfair though, and finally I come to appreciate Swiss punctuality for what it is: a deep expression of respect for other people. A punctual person is a considerate one. By showing up on time for everything, a Swiss person is saying, in effect, “I value your time and, by extension, I value you.” It's no coincidence that the Swiss are the world’s watchmakers. Which came first, the precise clocks and watches or the precise people? Hard to say, but the result is the same: a nation where the trains and everything else really do run on time. How to explain this punctuality? No one knows for sure. But a popular theory is that, historically, it arises from the

tough, mountainous area. Either you planted your crops on time and harvested them at the correct time or, well, you starved. Punctuality, sadly, is a dying art in many parts of the world. Mobile phones are partly to blame. We feel less compelled (紧迫的) to arrive on time if we can always text to say we're running a few minutes late. I don't sense that is happening in Switzerland, though. Punctuality is not without its weaknesses. Extreme punctuality also creates an expectation, and if that expectation is not met,disappointment follows. A contest organized by Airbnb is offering three lucky winners the chance to spend a night in the company of sharks. The winners and their guests will get access to a transparent (透明的) glass bedroom in the 33-foot deep Paris Aquarium where 35 sharks are living. Interested applicants, who must be 18 years or older and in good health, can apply for the contest through the Airbnb website. “On the 11th, 12th, and 13th of April, the Paris Aquarium will open its doors for a night in a room full of sharks,” the website states. “And not just any room: you will sleep in a round bed, with a breathtaking view of the world of sharks.” The unusual event will be hosted by a free diver, photographer, and shark enthusiast Fred Buyle, and a biologist will provide the winners with a special course on sharks --- their mysterious lives and their role in the ocean's ecosystem, with which the winners can better understand the sharks and thus avoid disturbing their life in the aquarium when they stay there.
