Lizards (蜥蜴) are coldblooded animals. This means their body temperature changes with that of their environment. However, by changing their behavior the whole day, they can keep their temperature unchanging.

Lizards are among the many animals that live in deserts(沙漠). They usually come out of their holes early in the morning. Most lizards get heat in the sun before starting their daily activities. In mid-morning, they go out for food. If it becomes too hot, lizards can raise their tails and bodies off the ground to help cool off. At mid-day, they return to their holes or stay under rocks for several hours. Late in the day, they again lie in the sun to get heat before the unpleasantly cold desert night falls.

Like all animals，lizards have ways of protecting themselves. Some types of lizards have developed a most unusual ability to protect themselves. If a lizard is caught by its tail by another animal, the tail will break off. Then the tail will go on moving around to stop the attacker(攻击者) while the lizard runs away. A month or two later, the lizard grows a new tail.

There are about 3,000 kinds of lizards, and all of them can bite, but only two types of lizards are poisonous(有毒的): the Gila monster of the southwestern United States and the Mexican bearded lizard. Both are short-legged, thick-bodied with fat tails. These lizards do not attack people and will not bite them unless they are attacked.
