1.Greetings
2.Review what we learned in Lesson 1a 3.New lesson
1) Warmer(books closed): T writes the words grammar and vocabulary on the board and asks students to say which is more important when learning a language. T explains that as the exam is heavily biased towards reading and listening, vocabulary is far more important than structure. T also explains that Ss are likely to encounter words in the texts which they do not know. T states the aims of the unit to establish useful ways of guessing the meaning of words and storing and building new vocabulary.
2) Understanding words:
a. Ss work in pairs to identify the types of words
b. Ss then identify which type of word can fill the gaps and complete
the sentences.
3) Storing new vocabulary:
a. Let students work in pairs as they discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the five ways of physically storing vocabulary. In feedback T also asks Ss which of the ways they themselves use. T encourages Ss to report any other ways they know and which they can recommend to other Ss.
b. The increased emphasis on vocabulary in English language teaching over the last few years has resulted in many useful strategies for more effective organization and leaning of new vocabulary. Ss may not be aware of these, however, and the exercise is to introduce five basic strategies for organizing and recording vocabulary.
c. Ss work in pairs and decide how best to store the groups of words. Ss refer to the five ways illustrated earlier. 4) Vocabulary cards:
a. T let Ss to hand blank cards to Ss to complete this exercise. T introduces the concept of vocabulary cards and elicits what kind of information would be useful on the cards. Ss then look at the example card in the book. Ss then produce their own cards for the words in the box. Ss compare versions in pairs before a group discussion on the advantages of including the various different types of information on a card. T also asks how Ss think they can best display their information on a card and also how they can use the completed cards during their course.
b. The card illustrated is an example of the use of cards for the storage of vocabulary. T extends the discussion to illustrate cards for vocabulary building by showing cards for matching collocations and opposites etc. T can take in and demonstrate and relevant cards that he/she has made for other lessons or that he/she has taken
from published materials. T suggests Ss might like to make their own cards and test themselves/each other by playing Pelmanism and Snap etc.
