Water Pot
An elderly woman had two large pots. She hung them on either end of a pole (扁 担)when she carried water with them. One of the pots had a crack (裂痕)in it, while the other pot was perfect. The perfect pot could keep full at the end of the long walk from the river to the house, but the broken pot arrived only half full. For two years this went on every day. Of course the perfect pot was proud of itself. But the broken pot was ashamed of itself.
One day, the broken pot spoke to the woman, “I am ashamed of myself, and I want to say sorry to you.”
“Why?” asked the woman. “What are you ashamed of?”
“For the last two years, I have done only half of my work,” the broken pot said.
The woman smiled and said, “When we come back, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers on the road.”
As they went up the hill, the broken pot saw many beautiful flowers on one side of the road and this cheered it sometimes. But, at the end of the walk, it still felt bad because there is only half pot of water in it.
The woman said to the pot, “Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of the road? I planted flowers on your side of the road. Every day while we walk back from the river, you have watered them.”
Each of us has our weakness. But remember! Nothing goes to waste. Don't be ashamed of our weakness (弱点). In our weakness we can find our strength.

A
“Cool” is a word with many meanings. Its old meaning is used to express (表达)a temperature that is a little bit cold. As the world has changed, the word has had many different meanings.
“Cool” can be used to express feelings of interest in almost anything. When you see a famous car in the street, maybe you will say “It's cool.” You may think, “He's so cool,” when you see your favourite football star.
We all maximize (扩大)the meaning of “cool”. You can use it instead of many words such as “new” or “surprising”. Here's an interesting story we can use to show the way the word is used. A teacher asked her students to write about the waterfall (瀑布)they had visited. On one student's paper was just the one sentence, “It's so cool”. Maybe he thought it was the best way to show what he saw and felt.
But the story also shows a scarcity (缺乏)of words. Without “cool”, some people have no words to show the same meaning. So it is quite important to keep some credibility (可信性). Can you think of many other words that make your life as colourful as the word “cool”? I can. And I think they are also very cool.
1.We know that the word “cool” has________. A.only one meaning B.no meanings C.many different meanings D.the same meaning 2.In the passage, the word “express” means________. A.see B.show C.know D.feel 3.If you are ________ something, you may say, “It's cool.” A.interested in B.angry about C.afraid of D.unhappy with 4.The writer takes an example to show he is ________ the way the word is used. A.pleased with B.strange to C.worried about D.careful with
5.According to the passage, we know that the word “cool”________. A.can be only used to express a kind of temperature B.usually means something interesting C.can make your life colourful D.may not be as cool as it seems

We use both words and gestures (手势)to express our feelings, but the problem is that these words and gestures can be understood in different ways.
It is true that a smile means the same thing in any language, so does laughter or crying. Animals also show the same feelings. Dogs, tigers and humans, for example, often show their teeth when they are angry. This is probably because they are born with those behavior patterns.
Fear is another emotion that is shown in the same way all over the world. In Chinese and in English, a phrase (短语)like “he went pale and begin to tremble” suggests that the man is either very afraid or he has just got a very big shock. However, “he opened his eyes wide” is used to suggest anger in Chinese, but in English it means surprise. In Chinese surprise can be described (描述)in a phrase like “they stretched out their tongues” ! But in English it means or expresses strong dislike.
Even in the same culture, it's different for people to understand and express feelings. In America, people think that women are usually better than men at showing fear, anger, love and happiness on people's faces. Other studies show that older people usually find it easier to know or understand body language than younger people do.
1.The animals are ________ when they show their teeth. A.happy B.anger C.surprise D.dislike 2.The phrase “he opened his eyes wide” suggests ________ in English. A.anger B.surprise C.afraid D.sad 3.In the same culture,________.
A.people may have the different understand and feelings B.people may have the same understanding of something C.people can't understand each other
D.people can understand and express feelings easily 4.According to the passage,________.
A.we can hardly understand what people's gestures mean
B.we can't understand the people when they describe their feelings in words or gestures C.older people can understand body language better than young people D.gestures and the words can be understood in the same way 5.The best title for this passage may be________. A.Different Feelings
B.Words, Gestures and Feelings C.Gestures and Feelings
D.Culture and Understanding 三、完形填空
