David Dicks, 18, left Perth on the 10-metre sailing boat On February 26, 1996. He returned with a warm hero’s welcome, cheered by thousands on the shore and greeted by about 200 other boats.

At the age of 17 when he started out, the teenager’s voyage(航海) gave him his first look ever at snow when he rounded Cape Horn.

Strong winds in the Pacific broke his mast in May, but he kept going until he could borrow a tool from the British Royal Navy to fix it. “David had dreamed of a round-the-world sail when he was five, inspired by a family friend who did it three times,” his mother Patricia Dicks said. “Once he started making plans to do it, I never doubted that he would,” she said. In September, 20-year-old Brain “BJ” Caldwell Jr. landed a 26 sloop(单桅帆船) in Hawaii and asked for the title of the youngest sailor circling the world. His asking was admitted by the World Sailing Commission.

Australian news reported that the last record holder accepted by the Guinness Book of Records was American Robert Lee Graham, who set out in 1965 at the age of 16.

Graham took five years to complete the trip, stopping off along the way to get married. But David asked for the nonstop voyages.

Height is just one of the thousands of features your genes decide. In fact, because you have two parents, your genes provide you a height that usually lands somewhere between the height of each parent. If both your parents are tall, then most probably you will be tall, too, but if you have questions about how tall you’re going to be, ask your doctor if he or she can help you find it out.

But genes don’t decided everything. For example, eating an unhealthy diet can keep you from growing to your full potential(潜力). Getting plenty of sleep and enough exercise will help you grow to the expected height.

No doubt(怀疑) you’re wondering how fast you should grow. It depends. There’s no perfect or right answer. Generally speaking, kids grow about 2 inches (6 centimeters) a year between age 3 and the time when they start puberty. Your doctor will know how your growth has been going over the years. Two centimeters here and 2 inches there are not nearly as important as the height you’re at now, how you’ve been growing up to this point, and what other changes your body may be going through.

Don’t be scared if you seem to have grown a lot in a very short time. Everyone has a growth spurt(高峰) during puberty. The age for starting puberty is about 10 for girls and about 11 for boys. But it can be earlier or later—between 7 and 13 for girls and 9 and 15 for boys.

You’ll usually begin to notice that you’re growing faster about a year or so after your body starts to show the first changes of puberty. 56. The underlined word “puberty” means________.

A. when your body starts changing and becoming more grown up B. when your body starts growing C. when your body grows slowly D. when your body stops growing

57. Which is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A. Your height most probably depends on how high your parents are. B You may be scared sometimes when you grow too fast.

C. Girls’ age for starting puberty is usually earlier than that for boys’. D. The time showing the first changes of puberty is never noticed. 58. After reading this passage, we can explain _____________.

A. how good it is to be a doctor B. how much sleep time we need C. why genes can’t decide everything D. what healthy diet is 59. This passage is mainly about ________________. A. how the genes work in your body. B. how you grow to a certain height C. why you look like your parents D. when is the time you grow fast

Then Lisa was ready for more therapy, thanks to Mr. Ching. She had learned to do one simple thing. She could learn to do other simple things. Mr. Ching was trainded to help with Lisa’s therapy.

To become foster grandparents, people must be at least sixty years old and in good health. They must be willing to give their time to handicapped children. They are volunteer, so they are not paid. They are given money for expenses such as transportation.

Mr. Ching speaks for most foster grandparents when he says, “We all benefit(受益). The handicapped children benefit because we help them live more useful lives.
