第一节 (共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

My husband and I used to live in the city, but we often faced a lot of problems there. There was a lot of late-night noise. It was difficult to find parking. And the rent of the apartment was high. Finally, my husband and I decided to move to the suburbs(郊区) outside Boston.

We started looking for our new home. It turned out that many other people were also moving to the suburbs and it wasn’t easy to find a nice house there. Finally, we went to see a small and dark house. It needed a lot of work. But it was well built and it was on a street where we could walk to Starbucks, restaurants and bus stops. Well, before I knew it, we had made an offer and the house became ours.

On our first night in the house I cried for five hours. I thought we had made the wrong choice and I wanted to go back to the city. The house was smelly and old. And many families and old people lived around it. But after thinking of the problems we had when we were living in the city, I calmed down. Besides, our new home wasn’t that bad, after all. I had a driveway of my own. There were three big bedrooms and a backyard for my dog. Oh, how lovely the sound of nothing was. I changed the house inch by inch and it became a very comfortable home.

We have been in our house for over two years until now and it’s the best move we have ever made. While I’m glad I can drive into the city in 15 minutes and enjoy all it has offered, I’m always happy to return home.

21. The writer and her husband moved to the suburbs because they__________.

A. no longer liked living in the city. B. couldn’t afford the rent in the city. C. wanted to buy a small house. D. found work there.

22. On the first night in the house, the writer__________.

A. was too excited.

B. felt scared living there.

C. regretted moving there at first.

D. was moved to tears by its quietness.

3

23. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 show about the house?

A. It was lovely.

B. It was really quiet. C. It had nothing in it. D. It has beautiful sound.

24. We can learn from the passage that the writer __________.

A. hates driving to the city B. is afraid of returning home C. loves living in the suburbs now D. cannot wait to go back to the city

B

Do you love music? If you do, do you think playing music will do you any good? I often wonder about the influence music has on kids and I think it would be better for me to ask a good music teacher.

Recently, I was lucky enough to chat with Kristi White. Kristi has over 13 years' experience in teaching music. She said, \other subjects cannot. Music has the ability to help some kids, who are uninterested in study, stay in school. Many studies show that learning music leads to positive personal and social results. From my experience, students in the arts can easily build up their confidence and feel at ease expressing their ideas. \

I was surprised to hear that music was the only subject helping some kids stay in school. To prove that, I did some research myself. I referred to a study by the Centre for Music Research at Florida State University. According to it, students at risk of not successfully completing their high school education consider music as a major reason for staying in school.

So what about the introverts(内向的人) like me? The ones who have a thirst for it but are afraid to perform in front of others? Ms. White had the following to say, \become confident social butterflies by the end of the year.\

In my chat with Kristi White, I was despondent to learn that music programs are being ignored in schools around the world. This needs to change quickly. Music is a gift. It brings people together and clearly places our youth on the right path, giving us the tools to deal with many difficulties. It makes no sense that some schools are taking it out of their syllabus(课程表).

Imagine having nothing to sing or dance to? Let's make sure we'll never live in a world like that.

25. The author talked with Kristi White in order to __________.

A. ask about some music programs

B. learn how to build up self-confidence C. know about the effect music has on kids D. learn how to have positive personal results

4

26. What do we know about the study stated in Paragraph 3?

A. It made the author very surprised. B. It agrees with what Kristi White said.

C. It shows music is extremely popular in school.

D. It shows students can't complete their studies without music. 27. What does the underlined word \

A. Happy. B. Grateful. C. Fortunate. D. Disappointed. 28. What is the passage mainly about?

A. Why not all people learn music. B. Why kids need music in their life. C. Why music is important to everyone. D. Why some schools don't teach music.

C

Many students consider math to be hard and boring and do not work hard on math. But I think everyone should learn math well.

Math to learning is like strength training to sports. You cannot become a major sports star without receiving enough strength training. Also, you cannot become a star within your job unless you can think cleverly and critically. And math will help you do that.

Winners of American Idol and other famous people may make money, but most of them get stale after a few years. Then they will go to less rewarding careers. If you skip auditions and the sports channels and instead do your homework, especially math, you can go on to get an education that will help you get a well-paid job. Much more than what pop singers and sports stars make if you calculate the money you make over a lifetime.

You can get an easier time at college if you learn math well at high school. Yes, it is hard work to learn math well while in high school. But when it is time for college or university, you can skip reading pages of boring and over-explaining college texts. Instead, you can look at a chart or a formula, and understand how things relate to each other. If you are good at math, you can work smarter, not harder.

Leaning math well is important because you will live in a global world. You will compete for the interesting jobs against people from the whole world. The smart kids in East Europe, India and China consider math and other “hard” science as a ticket out of poverty. Why not do as they do—get knowledge that makes you competitive all over the world, not just in your home country?

29. What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?

A. Math is the subject that bosses like most. B. Math is the basis for people’s daily work. C. Math allows people to read things quickly. D. Math helps people perform well in their work.
