B. stupid

C. greedy

D. generous

Passage 13

Because I will be away for a few days after Spring Break, I am writing this during the actual holiday, when I can use time to catch up on a number of purely administrative (管理的) items.

First of all, you should have received the letter I sent out on April 2 advising of the transition (过渡) arrangements to new leadership at ISM (International School of Moscow). In that letter I pointed out that Dr. Paul Malone will be arriving in Moscow on Monday, May 4th, and that I will work with him during that week to ensure smooth transition. My last day at ISM will be Friday, May 8th.

Several people have asked me why I required Dr. Malone to come early. There are many problems facing ISM at the moment which have major implications (影响) for the future, and it makes sense for the new director to come aboard before the end of the school year. This will give him the chance to play a major role in the planning process for 2015—2016 and beyond. The fact that Paul Malone is able to arrive in early May is good for the school. I have been working closely with him, and will do everything possible to see that he can move in easily when I leave. From here I will go to Hong Kong for a couple of weeks to spend time in my new situation, and then I will return to the United States for a few weeks‘ vacation.

In the most recent edition of the Compass (a kind of paper of ISM), I wrote briefly what I consider to be the major challenge for ISM in the future. I am sure that the new leadership of the school will be able to face those challenges in an active manner, which will ensure a strong future for the school. I shall certainly watch the progress of the school with interest. The results of the school for the past few years have been quite outstanding, and I fully expect that level of performance to continue.

1. We can infer from the text that the writer was the _________ of ISM.

A. director B. employee C. teacher D. student 2. Why should Dr. Malone come to ISM early? A. To work closely with the author. B. To do everything possible for the school. C. To move in easily when the author leaves.

D. To work with the author for a few days and make a future plan. 3. The underlined word ―situation‖ in the third paragraph means_________.

A. place B. job C. appointment D. condition 4. From the text, we learn that _____. A. Paul Malone is a capable man

B. the writer is a best friend of Paul Malone‘s

C. Paul Malone will work with the writer for several years

D. the writer will do his best to help Paul Malone to work well at ISM

Passage 14

As a geothermal scientist, I knew that boiling rivers exist—but they‘re always near volcanoes. You need a lot of heat to make that much water boil. We were working in the volcanic gap, a 950-mile stretch that covers most of Peru, where there hasn‘t been active volcanism for the past two million years.

Yet we‘d found the Shanay-timpishka, a name derived from ―boiled with the heat of the sun.‖ My measurements averaged 185°-196 °F. The locals think it‘s so hot because of the Yacumama, or ―water mother‖ — a spirit who gives birth to waters — represented by a serpent-head-shaped rock at the origin of the heated water. I had to cut my way through the brush at the side of the river to take temperature readings. All the while, right next to me was this very hot, fast-flowing body of water the width of a two-lane street. The shaman at the nearest village had told me, ―Use your feet like eyes.‖ You can‘t see heat, but you can feel it when you step near it. I wore sandals.

I was at a part of the river measuring 210°F, standing on a rock the size of a sheet of paper, when the rain turned on. It was like a curtain rising: The temperature differential between the rain and the river caused a whiteout. I couldn‘t see, but I whistled to let my partner know I was OK.

At 130°F flesh cooks. My eyes would have cooked in less than a minute, and I couldn‘t have seen how to get out. I‘d seen rats and an opossum fall in, their eyes turning milky white. I kept whistling.

After 15 minutes the rain stopped and the steam cleared. A hard rain in most situations would have been inconsequential. Here, for a matter of minutes, it thinned the line between researching and being boiled alive. 1. What do we know about boiling rivers?

A. They are always found not far from volcanoes. B. They were discovered two million years ago. C. Geothermal scientists doubt their existence. 2. According to the locals, the Yacumama _________. A. is their ancestor C. is a snake spirit

B. has something to do with ―heating thing‖ D. stands at the starting point of the Shanaya D. Most of them can be found in Peru.

3. The author wore sandals because _________. A. it was convenient to wear sandals in the river C. he wanted to feel heat with his feet 4. When it rained, the author _________.

A. signaled to his partner for help B. was in danger of losing his life C. raised a curtain to protect himself D. fell down because of his blindness 5. What is the best title for the text? A. Water near volcanoes C. Boiling point

B. Milky white eyes D. A hard rain

B. he was advised to do so by his friend D. the temperature was high there

Passage 15

Would you like to be an actor, but aren‘t the right age or physical type for the part? Don‘t give up: there may be a place for you in the world of voice-acting.

Twenty-year-old Rickey Collins brings Tucker Foley to life in the cartoon Danny Phantom. In addition to many appearances on television and in movies, Rickey is a voice-over actor, someone we hear but don‘t see. Rickey has acted since he was 6, both on and off camera. After school, his grandmother ---- a manager and acting coach ---- helped him develop his skills by doing voice exercises and reading aloud.

Voice-over actors do many kinds of acting. They are the voices of cartoon characters on television, in movies and video games, and for communicating toys. In films, they replace the foreign language conversation with English version. They create crowd noises, make commercials, act in radio plays, and record telephone instructions and public announcements. They read books on tape and even record museum tours.

Like other actors, voice-over actors need to understand scripts, interpret characters, and breathe correctly. They have to master voice techniques, such as pacing, volume, and range. Sometimes they use their normal voices; other times they change their voices to create different characters or noises. Rickey receives his Danny Phantom scripts only a few days before he tapes each episode (集). He writes helpful notes on the script to guide himself on speaking his part.

Rickey practices, then tapes at the recording studio. He and the other cast members sit in a soundproof booth, acting out their characters as they read their lines into the microphones. ―The cartoon gets created after we record the words, so we have to imagine everything in our mind,‖ says Rickey. Later, the recorded words, music, and sound effects are combined with the cartoon art to create the cartoon we enjoy on TV. Sound interesting? Maybe you can have a ―voice‖ in acting after all!

1. The sentence underlined in paragraph 2 means _________.

A. Rickey draws the character B. Rickey names Tucker Foley

C. Rickey makes the character seem real D. Rickey decides the future of Tucker Foley 2. From the passage we can infer that _________.

A. it‘s very complex to become a cartoon film voice-over actor B. Rickey has been involved with acting most of his life C. Rickey was an actor before he was six D. many people have nice voices 3. Paragraph 4 mainly tells us that _________.

A. a voice-over actor works very hard B. being a voice-over actor needs talents C. being a voice-over actor requires skills D. a voice-over actor should change his voice 4. The information in this article would be most valuable to people _________.

A. who want to build a career around their voices B. who need to develop their stage-acting skills C. who want to understand scriptwriting D. who need to practice voice exercises

Passage 16

Fall is a time when career regrets become stronger than during the relaxing summer months.New jobs appear on job boards, and many colleagues and friends move on to new careers or go off to graduate school. If you aren‘t moving with them, you can become vulnerable (脆弱的) to ―should have‖ thinking.

The ―should haves‖ are hard to turn off. ―I should have gotten that promotion‖ ―I should have never chosen Public Relations.‖ These ―should haves‖ eat at you, particularly if you are comparing your careers to the careers of others.

Thinking a lot about what you should have done is especially destructive because it carries a feeling of futility (徒劳). Once that happens, anger and hate build up, and you quit trying. This is painfully obvious to others—you won‘t get the best assignments and honestly. People avoid those who have bad attitudes. Instead of being upset about the negative, you have to change your thinking altogether.

The right approach is to replace the ―should haves‘‘ with ―what ifs‖. Evelyn‘s family persuaded her to go into accounting, but after five miserable years at a financial services firm she still regretted not following her passion into music. She believed it was ―too late to change now‖, and ―I‘d never be able to support myself.‖

But when she started thinking about ―what ifs‘‘ instead of ―should haves‖, Evelyn‘s attitude changed. She asked, ―What if I work in an environment where there are lots of musicians and music?‖ The ―what ifs‖ lead her to target accounting jobs in music departments of universities or in other music organizations. While she was looking, she volunteered to help a local music school push out its books on Quick Books. When she mentioned her interest in a career change to some people on the board of the music school, they helped her get started networking in the music world. Now she is the financial administrator of a large music festival, where she gets free music lessons with the performers.

If career regrets attack you this fall, get a few friends together, gain a little knowledge of yourself and try asking a different question: What if? 1. Which of the following is true?

A. Many people are strongly influenced by ―should haves‖. B. Many colleagues left school because of the ―should haves‖. C. Workers should change their thinking to rid of bad moods. D. It‘s easy to change the ―should haves‖ thinking of workers. 2. The ―should haves‖ can bring the effects EXCEPT _________.

A. leaving school B. worse assignments C. bad attitudes D. a sense of uselessness 3. It can NOT be inferred from Paragraph 4&5 that _________. A. Evelyn became the administrator about music directly B. Evelyn still loved music after five miserable years C. Evelyn was happy to work as an administrator about music D. Evelyn achieved success due to the thinking of ―what ifs‖

39

4. The main purpose of this passage is to _________. A. warn people to be careful of ―should haves‖ C. make people change attitude when necessary

B. describe the need to change one‘s perspective D. provide people with suggestions on careers

Passage 17

What do hikers look at while they are walking in the mountains? Research was done to find out which things most appeal to hikers in the mountains. Twenty hikers were each given a camera and a small cassette tape player, which was to be kept on during the hike. Whenever they heard a voice on the tape say ―Take a picture now!‖, they had to take a picture of whatever they were looking at. Then, using the scales 1 (not at all) to 7 (very or very much), they had to respond to the following questions: (a) ―How beautiful do you feel the view is?‖ and (b) ―How satisfied are you with the view?‖ The instruction to take a picture was repeated several times during the hike. The researchers later divided the photographs into five groups according to the main object in the picture. They then judged the distance of that object from the hiker and divided the photos accordingly. The results, together with the averages of the hikers‘ responses to questions (a) and (b), are shown in the table below.

Type of Object Photographed Water X Y Z Other objects Total Number of Photos According to Average of Responses Distance Less than 15m 9 45 31 0 25 110 15-1000m 12 5 3 9 4 33

From this table it can be seen that, within the range 0-15 meters, the type of object most often photographed was Ground, followed by Plants. But Ground was felt to be the least beautiful of the five groups of objects. Mountains and Valleys gave the greatest satisfaction to the hikers.

Interestingly, it was also found that male hikers were more likely to be viewing objects classed as Ground or Mountains and Valleys. On the other hand, female hikers were more likely to be looking at Other Objects, such as signs, the sky, and people around them. Another finding was that there was a connection between hikers‘ previous visits to this area and the distance of the object viewed. Hikers visiting the area for the first time tended to be viewing objects which were far away from them, while those who had visited the area before tended to look at objects which were closer.

1. In the table, X, Y and Z should be filled in with three letters a, be and c, which stand for three different objects. Which group is right?
