Unit 6 How long have you been collecting shells？

Teaching goals

1. Language goals:

a. Words and phrases：shell, collect shells, skate（n。）, pair, a pair of skates, marathon, skating marathon b. Drills：（1）How long did you …？

（2）How long have you been（doing）…？ —I have been（doing）… for / since…

2. Ability goals：Enable the students to know how to talk about the things they have been doing. 3. Learning ability goals：Learn to talk about how long they have been doing the things.

Teaching important points：The basic drills about the present perfective progressive

tense.

Teaching difficult points：Lead the students to use “for” or “since”to answer the

questions.

Teaching methods：task-based activity, discussion, pairwork, groupwork, listening and

speaking

Teaching steps： Step 1 Lead-in

T：Hello, everyone. Nice to see you. My family name is Liu, so you can call me Miss Liu. I’m very glad to study with all of you. Before our new lesson, I’d like to ask you some questions.(Ask the students to answer them together or ask of one of them to answer the questions.) (Slide 2)

Did you sleep well last night? What time did you go to bed?

What time did your get up this morning?

(After that, show the drill “How long did you sleep last night?” And ask the students to answer it, then show the answer “—I slept for…”

Step 2 （Activity1a）Discussion

T：Now please discuss these questions and then give me your answers, OK？（Slide 3）When did

you start class today?

What’s the time now?

Are you still having class now?

(Give the students one or two minutes to discuss them and then ask one student to give the answers. After that, show the drill “How long have you been in class today ?”Ask the student to answer it. Then show the answer “—I have been in class for…”

Step 3 New words

T：OK, here are some new words we have to learn in this part. Now, please look at the pictures and let’s learn them together.（Slides 4, 5）

(show the pictures one by one, and learn the new words: shell, collect shells, skate…by asking and answering questions. )

Step 4 Drills：

T：Now let's learn some new drills. Please look at the pictures and listen carefully.（Slides 6, 7） (Point to the shells pictures and ask“What are those?” Get the students to answer “Shells”. Then ask them to listen:“I like collecting shells.” Ask:“What’s the boy’s hobby?” Get them to answer“He likes collecting shells.”Then let them listen to the drill“How long have you been collecting shells?”Ask: Can you answer it? Then show the answer“—I have been collecting shells for two years.” And practise it again. Slide7 is the same as Slide6. )

Step 5 Pairwork

T：OK，please look at the pictures and practise with your partner like this： （Slide 8）

OK, I’ll give you an example. (Show the first picture and ask one student to out with me.) T: Do you like playng football? S: —Yes, I do.

T: How long have you been playing football? S: —I have been playing football for 2 years.

(After that, give them a few minutes to practise and then ask one or two pairs to act out the conversations.)

Step 6 Drills：

T：Well done, everyone. Now let’s go on.（Slides 9, 10） (Point to the woman with glasses and ask.) T: What does the woman do? S: She is an English teacher. T: Yes, she started teaching English in 1998.

She is still teaching English now. ( Repeat them twice, and then show the drill.“How long has she been teaching English?”Get the students to answer“—She has been teaching English for 8 years.”Then lead them to use“since”to answer the question. Do with Slide 10 similarly. )

Step 7 Pairwork：

Now practise with your partner and then act them out.（Slide 11） (The same as Slide 8.)

Step 8 Listening Practice

T：OK，let’s do some listening. You just need to answer these two questions, and give me your answers after listening. Understand? S: Yes.

T: OK, please listen carefully.（Slides 12）

(After listening, ask one or two students to answer the questions and check the anwers.)

Step 9 Groupwork

T： Now, please interview your classmates. You can go around the class and ask them these three questions. And you have to finish the table. When you finish it, I’ll ask one of you to do a report. OK, please look carefully. I’ll give you an example.(Suppose that I am Li Mei. Ask one student to interview me.) Understand? S：Yes.

T：Good. Now let’s begin! (Slides13, 14)

Give them about 5 minutes. Then ask one or two students to do the report.

Step 10 Exercises
