Passage 5
The workers who brought the girl to the orphanage (孤儿院) knew little about her. The streets where they found her had been her home for many years. Her parents were unknown. They left her long ago. At the orphanage, the girl, like all the children there, was taught to read and write. While she was studying at the orphanage, she learned something else-to be independent. At twenty-one,she left the orphanage and began work as a secretary. And then,in 1975, while she was still working as an ordinary secretary, something special happened. She entered the Miss Hong Kong competition and won it. This was the turning point in her life. Now her name,Mary Cheung, was known to everybody.
Mary entered the competition because she wanted to show that orphanage girls could be something. Winning the competition gave her the chance to start a new life. This led her first into television and then into business as a manager. When she was working as a manager, she had trouble with her reports. \ English just wasn't good enough.\,she had a boyfriend (who later became her husband) to help her.
Mary studied management at Hong Kong Polytechnic and graduated in 1980. She started her own business in 1985. But she did not stop developing herself. She then studied at the University of Hong Kong. Since 1987,she had spent a lot of time on photography. She has held several exhibitions of her work in many places-China, New Zealand and Paris. She still found time, however, to work on TV, write for newspapers and bring up her family.

Passage 6 If you travel by air across the center of Africa or South America, you fly over forests for thousands of
kilometers. These great forests are the oceans of trees. There are thousands and thousands of different kinds of
plants and animals.
However, the world's forests are getting smaller all the time. We are cutting down the trees because we need wood, and we need more farmland. Some people say that there will not be any forests like these in 20 or
30 years. What will happen if they disappear?
If we cut down our forests, a lot of plants and animals will disappear from the world. In a lot of places the
new farmland will soon look like the old deserts. Crops will not grow there. It will not rain very often, and the
weather will get very hot. Perhaps the climate of the world will change. This will be dangerous for everyone in

A Passage 7 What makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes one person a genius, like the brilliant
Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of
where and how you live? These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear.
We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a
leg or an arm muscle. It needs exercise. Mental exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists (心理学家) think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent. If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.
Parents should also be careful with what they say to young children. According to some psychologists, if
parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing
silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive things to their children, such as

A Passage 12 Snowflakes look like white stars falling from the sky. But there have been times when snow has looked red,
green, yellow, or black. There have been snowflakes of almost every color. Think how it would seem to have
colored snowflakes coming down all around you.
Black snow fell in France one year. Another year grey snow fell in Japan. It was found that the snow was
mixed with ashes. This made it look dark. Red snow had come down in other countries. When this happened,
the snow was mixed with red dust.
Most snow looks white, but it is really the color of ice. Snow is ice that comes from snow cloud. Each snowflake begins with a small drop of frozen water. More water forms around this drop. The way the water freezes gives the snowflakes its shape.
No two snowflakes are ever just the same size or shape. Sometimes the snowflakes are broken when they
come down. Other snowflakes melt as they fall. All snowflakes are flat and have six sides, if they are not broken or melted. When the air is cold and dry, the falling snowflakes are small and hard. If the air wet and warm, the snowflakes are big and soft.
