阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Both of Shai?s parents were lawyers and expected her to follow suit. So she went to law school,
got a job at a great firm in Washington, DC, and worked as a lawyer for a decade. But her heart was never in it. “I had a big salary but no personal satisfaction,” she says.
Shai found pleasure in the same thing that had brought her joy since joining the church choir at the age of 12. “Singing always felt like communicating something real at a spiritual and emotional level,” says Shai. Yet she never considered it a career option. “That seemed like something people did in fairy tales, and I would never let my parents down,” she says.
It was her mom?s diagnosis (诊断) of brain cancer in 2009 that made Shai realize she had to write her own happily-ever-after. “Work was busy and my mother was ailing. So I was flying back and forth from Washington, DC to Houston to see her,” Shai says. “I finally said, ?Enough!? and quit.” While caring for her mom, Shai made a plan. She would spend her savings and study music for a year, and then open a part-time law practice so she could pursue her passion. Before her mother passed away two years later, she encouraged Shai to follow her dream. Her song Live This Life was inspired by her mom, and her dad came to watch her perform at clubs.
In 2012, Shai moved to Nashville to try singing and songwriting. A decade of presenting cases in court gave her the confidence to sing for a crowd. “At 20, I would have been too shy to perform,” says Shai.
“Doing music is so free,” Shai says. “There?s no pressure to be a star. Success, to me, isn?t a dollar amount or a record deal; it?s doing what I love.” 26. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Shai didn?t really like working as a lawyer. B. Shai didn?t know what she truly loved for ten years. C. Shai wasn?t satisfied with the pay she got as a lawyer. D. Shai was grateful for her parents? arrangement for her. 27. Shai didn?t consider singing a career option because she _______.
A. wasn?t good at singing at all B. was told by others not to consider it C. didn?t want to ruin spiritual communication D. didn?t want to violate her parents? expectations
28. What does the underlined word “ailing” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Sick.
B. Crazy. C. Worried.
D. Unhappy.
29. What was Shai?s mother?s attitude toward her singing?
A. Unknown. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive.
D. Negative.
30. By telling Shai?s story, the writer most probably wants to ________.
A. encourage us to pursue our dreams B. show that singing can be a practical career C. tell us the importance of choosing a right job D. show that family members? support is important

The World Health Organization says air pollution is now the world?s single-largest environmental health risk. A new report from the WHO says seven million people died in 2012 because of air pollution. That is more than twice as many as the number estimated in 2008.
The World Health Organization says people who die from air pollution are from both inside and outside buildings. It says new information shows air pollution is partly to blame for people dying at an early age from heart disease or strokes. It says other causes of death include cancer and long-term diseases of the lungs and breathing passages.
The WHO report says most deaths from air pollution take place in low-income and middle-income countries in Southeast Asia and the western Pacific Ocean. About half of the world?s population lives in those countries. Many people who live there use open fires or simple equipment to cook food and heat their homes. Health officials say 4.2 million people died at an early age in 2012 because of the burning of coal and biomass (生物质) fuels like wood, crop waste and animal waste. They say 3.7 million others died in cities and rural areas because of outside air pollution.
Air pollution is an international problem. Carlos Dora is the WHO?s Public Health, Environmental and Social Determinants of Health coordinator. He says countries must work together to reduce air pollution because what happens in one country can affect lives in another country.
Dr Dora says at one time, air pollution was worse in developed countries than in developing ones. But he notes developed countries: especially Britain and the United States, have taken steps to greatly reduce air pollution during the past 10 years. He says measures that help cut air pollution can be costly. But he says they may save money in the long term by lowering health care
costs.
31. According to the WHO, the number of deaths caused by air pollution in 2012 _______.
A. was doubted by many people B. was not surprising to the WHO C. was estimated to be the highest point D. was much higher than that estimated in 2008
32. How can people in countries in Southeast Asia reduce air pollution?
A. Using simple equipment to cook food. B. Heating their homes with biomass fuels. C. Cutting down on coal and biomass fuels. D. Avoiding going out using vehicles such as cars. 33. What does Carlos Dora call on countries to do?
A. To learn about other countries? air pollution problem. B. To cooperate to try to solve the air pollution problem.
C. To spend more money in caring for people suffering air pollution. D. To ask people in their countries to avoid burning coal in their daily life. 34. What can we learn about the air pollution from this passage?
A. It is the main cause of people?s early death.
B. People in poor countries are more likely to be affected. C. Each country should focus on its own environment.
D. It is worse in developed countries than in developing countries. 35. What does Carlos Dora think of cutting air pollution?
A. Very easy for some countries. B. Too costly for any country. C. Beneficial in the long run. D. Unworthy at the moment.

Grace is just 16 years old. At the age when most teenagers have not even completed high school, Grace has graduated from Florida Atlantic University (FAU) with a bachelor?s degree. What?s even more astonishing is that the brilliant girl received her high school diploma from Florida
Atlantic High School on May 9th, a week after she had graduated from college! Grace?s unique situation was made possible thanks to FAU?s policies that allow motivated students like her to pursue high school and college courses at the same time.
While pursuing two diplomas would have been enough for most kids, Grace, who graduated with a 3.86 grade-point average, seemed to even find time to play the violin for not one, but two bands!
Though this youngest FAU graduate in over a century has attracted national attention with her unique accomplishments, in Grace?s family she is just normal. That?s because the young genius, who is the third out of nine children, comes from a family of overachievers. Her 19-year-old sister Gisla who is now pursuing a master?s degree in urban planning also graduated at 16, while her 17-year-old sister Gabrielle is also pursuing her master?s degree and is scheduled to graduate from FAU this summer.
Grace?s education began when she was just a toddler. Despite never being formally taught how to read, she learnt by simply watching her two sisters and was excellent by the time she turned two. From then on, her mother decided to include Grace in all the school sessions she had with her elder sisters at home. By the time she was 13, the girl was ready for high school and college!
And the young girl is far from done yet. She plans to return to FAU in the fall to pursue a master?s degree in public administration. Following that, the young girl wants to obtain a law degree and pursue a career that she hopes will be on the US Supreme Court as a judge, where she plans to lead efforts for peace!
36. What?s the difference between Grace and other teenagers?
A. She didn?t learn the textbooks that others learnt. B. She went to college without going to high school. C. She graduated from FAU with a bachelor?s degree.
D. She pursued high school and college courses at the same time. 37. When Grace was pursuing her diplomas, she _______.
A. couldn?t enjoy her life as other teenagers did B. often went to watch the shows of a band C. often struggled hard to get higher grades
D. could spare time for some after-school activities
38. What does the writer mean by saying Grace is just normal in her family?
A. She is from a family of people like her. B. She isn?t treated differently by her parents. C. She is never proud of herself in her family. D. She isn?t the most beautiful one in her family.
39. When Grace?s mother noticed Grace was good at learning as a toddler, she ________.
A. was greatly shocked B. decided to homeschool her C. sent her to a school at once D. didn?t think she could teach her 40. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Grace?s interests in daily life B. Grace?s plans for her future. C. Grace?s plans for the coming fall. D. Grace?s efforts in realizing peace.

A team of scientists led by University of Texas, Austin, and astronomer Ivan Ramirez have found a star named HD 162826 that they believe is one of many siblings (同胞) our sun has. Formed 4.5 billion years ago, it is 15% larger than our sun and lies 110 light years away from the sun. Though not visible with the unaided eye, HD 162826 can be easily viewed with low-power telescopes. The team began its research by studying 30 possible candidates that had been found by various groups around the world. They also studied their separate orbits before coming to the conclusion that HD 162826 was the one that had been born from the same gas and dust system as our sun. Coincidentally, McDonald Observatory astronomers in West Texas have been studying HD 162826 for over 15 years. While they have no clue whether it is related to our sun, they do know that it does not have any hot Jupiter-sized planets orbiting close to the star. This, however, does
not rule out the possibility that HD 162826 hosts some Earth-size planets that host alien life. While the find is certainly exciting, the team, who plans to publish their study in the June 1st edition of the Astrophysical Journal, believes this is just the first of many siblings our sun has.
Professor Ramirez says 4.5 billion years ago, the sun was part of a group of a thousand or perhaps even a hundred thousand stars. The group has since broken away and spread to various parts of the Milky Way. Some like the HD 162826 have remained relatively close, while others are much farther away.
Though they will probably never be able to locate them all, if enough of the siblings can be found, the research team will be able to run each star?s orbits backwards in time and locate the place where they intersect (交叉). This will help solve the age-old mystery of how and where the sun was “born”.
41. Compared to our sun, HD 162826 ________.
A. is lighter in weight B. was formed earlier
C. was located nearer D. is larger in size
42. After studying 30 possible candidates, the researchers concluded that _______.
A the sun has about 30 siblings
B. HD 162826 is too different from our sun C. the sun and HD 162826 have the same origin D. HD 162826 lies 110 light years away from the sun
43. After doing research, McDonald Observatory astronomers in West Texas found that ________.
A. HD 162826 is related to the sun B. some Earth-size planets orbit HD 162826 C. there might be alien life near HD 162826 D. no hot Jupiter-sized planets orbit HD 162826
44. Which of the following statements would the team agree to?
A. HD 162826 will move further from the sun. B. Our sun just has a few siblings in the Milky Way. C. There?re many stars similar to the sun in the Milky Way.
D. 4.5 billion years ago our sun was several times bigger than it is now. 45. It is implied in the last paragraph that with more study, _______.
A. researchers will find all the sun?s siblings
B. researchers will exactly locate all the stars C. alien life may be found in the Milky Way D. the mystery of the sun may be solved

There are now almost one billion obese adults in developing countries. This figure was around 250 million in 1980. The number of very overweight people has increased by almost four times in the last 35 years.
A report from the Overseas Development Institute said one in three people is overweight. The institute wants all world governments to do more to change what people eat. The biggest reason why people are fatter is that they have more money and they are spending it on fast food. Fewer people are eating traditional, healthier food.
It?s not all bad news. Denmark and South Korea have done very well in the past few decades to deal with the obesity problem. Denmark introduced laws against trans-fatty acids (反式脂肪酸). Restaurants and food producers must be very careful about the fats when cooking food. South Korea started a public education program 20 years ago. The government of Korea made it necessary to encourage their traditional foods, which are low in fat and oil, high in vegetables, high in seafood and so on. There was a lot of training, public education and a sense that Korean food is good for you. 【写作内容】

基础写作(One possible version)
Last Saturday, I had an interview with the environmentalist Professor Wang about the environmental protection in China. According to Professor Wang, it?s obvious that there have been scarce natural resources, global warming, environmental pollution and food shortage so far. To deal with all these problems, he suggested that we should take some practical measures, such as taking public transport, bicycling or carpooling when going out. Besides, we are advised to save food, electricity, water and other resources. More importantly, we ought to firmly refuse to use disposable materials in our daily life. 读写任务(One possible version)
The number of fat adults has increased by about four times in the past decades because people
have more money for fast food. So some governments have made laws against fatty foods. As we all know, obesity does great harm to our health. It is quite easy for fat people to suffer from diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and so on. And all these diseases will result in great dangers to our life.
Our government should take responsibility for protecting us from fatty foods and rapidly making laws against such rubbish foods and other foods that are harmful to our health.
As for weight loss, it is necessary to pay more attention to what we eat. For example, we should get away from rubbish or too oily foods. On the other hand, we should take physical exercise on schedule every day. Only in this way can we lose weight and keep fit.
